Scarf It Up For Those In Need has been in operation since 2003, starting with 6 women making 500 scarves and delivering them to 3 agencies who serve the poor and needy. In 2008 Scarf It Up saw an increase in the number of people in need, and wanted to provide hats & gloves to go with our handmade scarves. To meet this increasing need more funds needed to be raised. So in January 2009 Scarf It Up became a program of Shoulder To Shoulder Inc., giving us a non-profit status to allow us to raise more funds. Shoulder To Shoulder is a 501© 3 corporation organized to relieve the destructive pressures of living in poverty for as many of its victims as possible.
In 2015 Scarf It Up gathered almost 11,000 handmade scarves and raised enough funds to purchase hats & a pair of gloves to go with each one. We distributed them to agencies that serve the poor and needy in Boone, Kenton, Campbell, Grant, Pendleton, and Butler counties in Kentucky, several agencies in Indiana and St. Vincent De Paul & Free Store Food Bank coat drives. It takes thousands of volunteers to make the amount of scarves needed each year. We depend on a variety of groups and individuals to make them such as Girl Scouts, church groups, banks, employee community service hours, Cub Scouts and many many more.
The program runs from September to February. Scarf It Up volunteers speak to organizations year round about the need in the area and instructional classes are taught by Scarf It Up volunteers monthly at the Kenton County Library,Erlanger and Durr Branches on how to make scarves. Scarves are gathered from collection barrels and taken to our storage space where Scarf It Up volunteers sort and box according to agencies’ request and deliver during December, January and February.
Scarf It Up is a 100% volunteer donation based organization.
