Scarf It Up For Those In Need is a program that gathers and distributes handmade scarves to inner city youth, homeless, the elderly and others in need. Handmade scarves can be knitted, crochet, or made from cut fleece
Our mission is to provide a handmade scarf, a hat and pair of gloves to the needy. Why a handmade scarf? Scarves that our handmade show that someone cares for the recipients. Just like any handmade item, lots of time and cares goes into it and the many people who receive these scarves need someone to love and care for them
Scarf It Up For Those In Need has been in operation since 2003. In 2008 Scarf It Up saw an increase in the number of people in need, to meet this need more funds needed to be raised. So in January 2009 Scarf It Up became a program of Shoulder To Shoulder Inc. giving us a non-profit status to allow us to raise more funds. Shoulder to Shoulder Inc. is a 501© 3 corporation organized to relieve the destructive pressures of living in poverty for as many of its Northern Kentucky victims as possible. With Scarf It Up serving these same individuals on a seasonal basis this became a logical solution for us.
Scarf It Up runs from September to February. In September through November, Scarf It Up members speak to organizations about the need in the area and give instructional classes on how to make scarves. Scarves are gathered from collection barrels around Northern Kentucky and are distributed during December, January and February.
Scarf It Up gathered 5532 scarves in 2009 and with monetary support from the community and local business owners we were able to supply 5000 hats and pairs of gloves to go with our handmade scarves. Scarf It Up is run strictly by volunteers and donations We depend on businesses and the community to help us raise the funds needed to provide these basic needs. It is my hope that you or your group can help Scarf It Up keep thousands of less fortunate individuals in the NKY area a little warmer this winter.
